Students Take the Lead: Focus Group Workshop for the Open Chip Challenge
Open hardware stands for transparency, participation and digital sovereignty. But how can these values be realised in a student competition, from the language we use to the visual design?
To explore this question, our project team organised a focus group workshop with potential participants. At the Impact Hub in Berlin-Neukölln, students of computer science, microelectronics and related subjects came together to co-create answers to a key question:
What should an open-source chip design competition look like to truly inspire students and help them grow technically?
During creative, hands-on sessions, participants discussed, designed and reimagined the competition, considering everything from content ideas and visual identity to the strategic role of open-source technologies in driving innovation and collaboration within the semiconductor industry. The workshop provided us with valuable insights and concrete ideas, once again highlighting the importance of involving students from the outset.
